formatList - How to return the original HTML value?

How can I return the original element back so the results that are displayed actually have the value as it works out of the box?

formatList: function(data, elem){

return elem; //???? elem.html doesn't work nor does elem.html()

}

    Nevermind, figured it out! Hope this helps others!

    var new_elem = elem.html(data.label);
